NFL Eyes AI to Boost Officiating Accuracy

Date:

The NFL is considering artificial intelligence as a tool to enhance refereeing decisions.

After quarterly ownership meetings, Commissioner Roger Goodell explained the league is examining whether AI can assist officials and improve call accuracy.

While AI could help correct more rulings, alternative methods are also under consideration to achieve consistency.

Full-time referees remain essential. The NFL is hesitant to increase salaries enough for officials to leave other jobs, and that won’t shift without external pressure.

Centralized midweek sessions could provide a major advantage. Officials might gather to review scenarios, refine best practices, and align standards across all crews.

Efforts to refine officiating are always worthwhile. In a world where sports betting is normalized, even minor errors can spark skepticism or allegations of foul play.

Whether real or imagined, controversies are unavoidable. The NFL believes demonstrating tangible improvements and a commitment to accuracy is the most effective way to maintain trust.
