The European Commission launched a new initiative on Tuesday to encourage the safe and reliable use of AI in healthcare across Europe.
COMPASS-AI, under the EU’s “Apply AI Strategy,” aims to ensure AI technologies are integrated responsibly into medical practices. The initiative’s goal is to enhance patient care while maintaining ethical and safety standards, according to a statement from the Commission.
COMPASS-AI will concentrate on two primary areas: cancer care and healthcare in remote areas. It will unite professionals, hospitals, and organizations to foster AI adoption in clinical environments.
Additionally, the program will create a digital platform for sharing best practices and offering guidance on AI usage in healthcare. Efforts will include boosting AI literacy among healthcare professionals, hospital managers, and patients.
Oliver Varhelyi, Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the EU’s dedication to ensuring AI’s innovative and ethical use in healthcare.
He highlighted AI’s transformative potential in healthcare, especially in improving precision medicine, accelerating clinical trials, enhancing diagnostics, optimizing treatment decisions, and streamlining operations.
The Apply AI Strategy outlines the EU’s plan to expand AI applications across key industries, with healthcare as one of the first sectors to benefit from trustworthy AI solutions.
