Exploring the Threats and Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence

Date:

Generative artificial intelligence has rapidly gained worldwide traction in just two years. This surge is transforming how people live and work. Researchers from the Harvard Kennedy School have examined the challenges and benefits brought by artificial intelligence.

Faculty members from the Project on Workforce—a collaboration among the Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and the Graduate School of Education—analyzed how artificial intelligence affects employment. They conducted national surveys to monitor how individuals use generative AI in professional and personal settings. Their findings aim to guide policymakers and leaders on the speed and economic effects of this technological shift.

Experts from the Kennedy School have also advised Congress on the subject. On June 4, 2025, public policy lecturer Bruce Schneier appeared before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight to discuss “The Federal Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” He expressed concern that merging citizen data across federal agencies could endanger privacy, security, and civil liberties when integrated into AI-driven systems.

Professor Danielle Allen continues to investigate the ethical, civic, and institutional aspects of deploying AI through her Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation. Her team developed a governance framework for artificial intelligence that promotes both innovation and human well-being.

Additionally, faculty members Sharad Goel, Dan Levy, and Teddy Svoronos teach degree and executive students about the science and societal influence of generative AI. Their courses prepare learners to use AI responsibly. To expand access, they have shared their instructional materials publicly.
